When crackle ceramic tiles are grouted they come alive with small cracks in the glaze. They are ideal for antique ceramic tile fireplaces, ceramic tile backsplashes, or anywhere else you want an old world look in ceramic tile.

Awesome can only describe this mother of pearl / opalescent tile. This iridescent tile is absolutely stunning. Each crack in the glaze helped separate the beautiful rainbow hues.

The opalescent effect on this ceramic tile was created by a 3-fire process. First the handmade, ceramic tile was fired to bisque. Second, a clear crackle ceramic tile glaze was applied and fired for the second time. Then, a dispersing agent and a mother of pearl essence was applied to the glazed ceramic tile and fired for the third time—wow!

What makes the mother of pearl essence so great on crackle tiles is, when the orange-colored essence is applied, it creeps into the cracks. When the tile is fired to 019, only the exposed surface is effected. The top of the tile gets the fantastic rainbow effect, but the cracks remain a stained orange, creating an interesting separation of color.

Crackle tile glazes add added dimension to any ceramic tile, including ceramic tile leaves. They come in a variety of colors, including:

The tiles below are samples of various crackle ceramic glazes. There are many other variations of colors that will be added to this site as they are created.

We suggest that you do not use crackle ceramic tiles on any food surface because bacteria can work its way into the tiny cracks.

Crackle tiles should not be used  in showers, swimming pools, or anywhere they might become saturated with water.

NOTE: Over time dirt has a way of working itself into the tiny glaze cracks, emphasizing the cracks. If you like this appearance, take some black india ink and rub it over the tile, then wipe it off. It will give it an aged appearance — Victorian bathroom wall tiles generally have this appearance with their 2x6 subway tiles.
